7.7.1777

There's a lot of hype around 07.07.07 this summer. Many couples can expect to share their anniversary with lots of others around the world for this most coveted wedding date in years. Al Gore even decided to jump into the fray putting on a seven continent concert asking the world to go green (which was very cool by the way). The number seven has significance in many cultures. It is a prime number, ladybugs have seven spots, there are seven stellar objects is our solar system visible to the naked eye, it is the number of notes in the major scale, and in the Bible it is represented as the number of perfection.

All of that is well and good, but I wanted to know what happened on 7.7.77. Not 1977, 1777. Here is what I found out:

On this date in 1777 a significant battle of the Revolutionary War was fought between American and British solders. It happens to be the only battle fought in the state of Vermont. The Battle of Hubbardton was a tactical victory for the Americans despite being pounded by the British. The battle gave the American rear guard enough time to retreat and re-group with the main Army despite suffering numerous losses. And I think you all know the rest of the story. America became the most prosperous nation on the planet. And you thought the whole triple 7 thing was all about wedding cake.

This is Madness, Part Deux

More games have been played, more teams have been knocked out, and my bracket is continuing to roll. I'm not sure how I'll fare after today's round of games but as of right now things are still looking pretty good. My rankings on Facebook jumped up after the last round of games. Here are my current standings:

Tampa Bay: #1
USF: #1
Facebook: #33

My picks for today's games...

Memphis over Ohio State
Kansas over UCLA

UPDATE: It all just came crashing down. Both Memphis and Kansas lost today which means only two of my final four picks are still alive. My new overall ranking is #85,599. There's always next year....
